Henry J. Kaiser (“The Oakland Civic”)
The Henry J. Kaiser Project in Oakland is a remarkable redevelopment endeavor that has transformed the former Kaiser Permanente headquarters into a vibrant mixed-use community. The historic Oakland Civic, home to the 6,000-seat Oakland Auditorium and the 1,900-seat Calvin Simmons Theatre, has been revitalized. For 90 years, the Oakland Auditorium hosted a multitude of significant events, from political speeches and conventions to concerts and sporting events, featuring renowned figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Bill Clinton, Elvis Presley, James Brown, and the Grateful Dead. Alongside preserving the Civic's rich history, the project has created dedicated spaces for local artists, makers, and performers, encompassing offices, practice areas, and performance venues. This transformative project has not only rejuvenated the Oakland Civic but also fostered a vibrant community that celebrates the city's cultural heritage.
