Pier 70 Bethlehem Steel Powerhouse

The powerhouse building was erected in 1905 as part of Bethlehem Steel's ambitious plans for its new west coast shipyard. This building was a crucial part of the electrical system, and also housed powerful compressors that provided pneumatic pressure throughout the shipyard. Notably, these compressors can still be observed inside the building.

The architectural design of the powerhouse building is attributed to Charles Peter Weeks, a San Francisco architect who studied at the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris and also contributed to several buildings on the UC Berkeley campus.
