Pier 70 Bethlehem Steel Powerhouse - Building 102
In 1905, after Bethlehem Steel acquired the Union Iron Works, the powerhouse building was erected as part of Bethlehem's ambitious plans for its new west coast shipyard. This building played a crucial role in various electrical distribution functions and housed powerful compressors that provided pneumatic pressure throughout the shipyards. Notably, these compressors can still be observed inside the building.
The architectural design of the powerhouse building is attributed to Charles Peter Weeks, a San Francisco architect who studied at the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris and also contributed to several buildings on the UC Berkeley campus.
