Pier 70 Union Iron Works Headquarters

Building 104 was built in 1896 as an office and administration building for Union Iron Works, and holds the distinction of being the second oldest surviving structure in the complex. Designed by architect George Percey (1847-1900) in a modified Renaissance Revival style, this brick building was touted as a rare example of a modern, fire-proof structure.

Empty and unsafe for occupancy due to seismic concerns, the building required extensive upgrades to meet current code, including installing fully-concealed concrete shear walls between the interior and exterior brick widths. Work also included rebuilding rotted wooden additions, and hand-restoring decorative copper cornices.
